Guarding Against Deception
Acts 20:28-31; 1 John 4:1-6

Paul's warning about "fierce wolves" and those who speak "twisted things" remains urgently relevant today. False teaching hasn't disappeared; it's simply evolved, often disguised in appealing packages and persuasive personalities. How do we guard ourselves? By knowing the truth so well that counterfeits become obvious. Paul urges the elders to "be alert," maintaining vigilant watch over themselves and the flock. This requires discernment—testing every teaching against Scripture, not personal preference or popular opinion. Ask yourself: Who am I listening to? Does this teacher point me to Jesus or to themselves? Do they submit to accountability and sound doctrine? Remember, a true shepherd smells like sheep, serves with humility, and always directs attention to Christ. Stay rooted in God's Word, surround yourself with faithful believers, and never stop testing what you hear against biblical truth.
